Aukio (means “square, angular” in Finnish) is a high-contrast display typeface with details inspired by the calligraphic practice of the Nordic countries. Its large squarish structure and angular inner shapes are a direct reference to this crafty and artistic world. Its digital drawing approach combined to its high contrast gives it a contemporary dimension for sensitive yet striking titles.
Calligraphic details have been preserved in the treatment of thin strokes and endings. As well in the shoulders and bowls connections which become slightly darker before joining the stems. On the other hand, the treatment of the verticals stems and horizontal crossbars is simplified by a geometric digital approach. This creates a visual contrast between manual and digital forms, which coexists and reveals different aspects of Aukio at different scales.
The aim behind the Aukio’s design was to pay homage at sources in a more contemporary design approach that would also respond to the graphic challenge required for today’s titles.
