About
Description

German-born punchcutter Johann Fleischman, a contemporary of John Baskerville and Pierre Simon Fournier, worked at the Enschedé Foundry in Haarlem. Expert in advanced tools and the qualities of fine steel, he pushed beyond the frontiers of his time, cutting active typefaces famous worldwide for their “sparkle.” Christian Schwartz focused on Fleischman’s exuberant angularity, carrying it to all weights of his Farnham series—Text, Display, and Headline; FB 2004, 2016.

Orange Italic

A New/Old foundry from Christian Schwartz

Orange Italic has been an art project, a design studio, and a magazine, and is now library of legacy typefaces from early in Christian Schwartz’s career.
First founded by type designer Christian Schwartz and design polymath Dino Sanchez in 2001, Orange Italic has been an art project, a design studio, and a magazine. As of 2023, it is a library of legacy typefaces from early in Schwartz’s career, prior to his co-founding Commercial Type with Paul Barnes in 2009. Most of these were released through Font Bureau, and others are finally being finished and put into general release for the first time. All of these families, from the influential Amplitude and Farnham to the obscure Fritz, have been updated for contemporary standards, with expanded character sets and italics for families that didn’t previously have them.
