Gautami is a typeface in the Telugu script, designed for typesetting the Telugu language of India. There is very little contrast between the thick and thin strokes of the characters, which gives it an almost “monoline” appearance and a “modern” style. Gautami was designed for use in the user interfaces on computer screens; its monoline style helps it maintain legibility when the screen resolution is low. It has very loose inter-line spacing – that is, more vertical space between one line and the next – which helps accommodate very tall subscript characters (elements of the characters that can appear below the main character in a line), though some users may want to adjust the space between lines. Gautami works well for body text onscreen at small sizes.
Gautami has two weights, Regular and Bold, and no italic styles. It was designed for Microsoft by type director Raghunath Joshi and Omkar Shende.
