Javanese Text is a typeface designed for setting the Javanese language, spoken in Indonesia and Suriname, in the Javanese script. It is based on traditional forms used in Javanese manuscripts, and is suitable for body text of documents as well as titles and headings. It includes capitals and lowercase for the Latin alphabet, designed to harmonize with the Javanese script.
Type designer John Hudson designed Javanese Text for Microsoft. The design is based on metal types cast in the early 20th century by Lettergieterij Amsterdam, which were an interpretation of the formal Javanese manuscript handwriting. Javanese Script is a “quasi-revival” of the metal typeface, with adjustments to improve its legibility onscreen and to improve some of the shapes that had been compromised by the constraints of metal type. Javanese Text has only one weight, and no italic style.
