Kartika is a typeface designed for typesetting in the Mayalayam script, which is used for the Mayalayam language and for Sanskrit texts in the southern Indian state of Kerala. Kartika has conventional forms and very little contrast between thick and thin strokes, which reflects the traditions of Mayalayam written and typeset forms. This low contrast makes Kartika work well for body text both onscreen and in print. The default leading (vertical space between lines of text) is tight in Kartika; adding a little extra vertical space might be useful in long texts.
Kartika was designed for Microsoft by type director Raghunath Joshi and Vikram Gaikwad. It has two weights, Regular and Bold, and no italic styles. The font includes capitals and lowercase letters for the Latin alphabet, derived from the Microsoft Sans Serif typeface. The word space for the Latin letters is unusually wide.
