Latha is a typeface designed for typesetting the Tamil language, using the Tamil script. Latha has a “modern” style, with low contrast between thick and thin strokes within the characters. It was one of the first digital computer typefaces, maybe the first, designed for Tamil. It has slightly compact proportions and is suitable for passages of text at small sizes on a computer screen. It is not suitable for use at large sizes.
Latha was designed for Microsoft by type director Raghunath Joshi and Vikram Gaikwad. It has two weights, Regular and Bold; it has no italic styles. It includes capital and lowercase letters for the Latin script, derived from the Microsoft Sans Serif typeface. The word spaces in the Latin script are unusually wide.
