Mangal is a typeface designed for typesetting Hindi and other languages that use the Devanagari script. It has almost no contrast between thick and thin strokes, and its style is “modern,” influenced by geometric shapes. Mangal was the first digital computer typeface, designed for display onscreen. Its distinctive open-knots and generous spacing make it a good choice for text at small sizes onscreen. It is not as suitable for use at large sizes in headlines.
Mangal was designed for Microsoft by Raghunath Joshi. It has two weights, Regular and Bold, and no italic styles. It includes capital and lowercase letters for the Latin alphabet in a similarly modern, sans serif style derived from the Microsoft Sans Serif typeface.
