Nirmala UI is a typeface designed for user interfaces on computer screens in several languages of South Asia and the scripts used to write them. The primary characteristic of Nirmala UI is simplicity and legibility, with a consistent typographic style across all of the scripts the typeface supports. It is designed to harmonize with the straightforward, sans serif style of Microsoft’s Segoe UI typeface. In addition to its primary function as a user-interface typeface, Nirmala UI can be used for headlines or body text in any of these languages.
Nirmala UI supports twelve scripts besides the Latin alphabet: Bengali, Devanagari, Kannada, Gujarati, Gurmukhi, Malayalam, Odia, Ol Chiki, Sinhala, Sora Sompeng, Tamil, and Telugu.
This workhorse multi-script typeface was designed for Microsoft by several type designers working with Tiro Typeworks: David Březina (Gujarati), Valentin Brusteaux (Telugu & Kannada), Jo De Baerdemaeker (Bengali), and John Hudson (Devanagari, Odia, Gurmukhi).
