Nyala is a typeface designed for setting the Ge‘ez script, which is used for writing several languages in Ethiopia and Eritrea, including Amharic, Tigrinya, and Tigre. Nyala has a light, open form that is especially easy to read onscreen. It can be used for titles, headlines, and subheads, as well as short passages of body text. Its accompanying Latin typeface has a style of its own, graceful and striking in similar large-size setting.
Type designer John Hudson designed Nyala, based on initial drawings by Geraldine Wade, for Microsoft. Its letter forms are based on typical Ethiopic text typefaces, with their shapes lightened and opened up to make them more legible onscreen. The Latin letters were designed to harmonize with the style and proportions of the Ethiopic syllabics. Nyala is named for the mountain nyala (tragelaphus buxtoni), a species of great African antelope native to the highlands of Ethiopia. Nyala has only one weight, and no italic style.
