I wanted the characters to be as wide and compact as possible, and make the letters fit nicely close to each other. I tried to get as much mass into the individual letter’s bounding box and squeeze the stems as close as possible, similar to, e.g. Klimax (Setup Type), Baseliner (Briefcase Type Foundry), or Corpulent (Suitcase Type Foundry). Donut’s dark ductus is enhanced by the tight spacing, where the letters bump into each other or overlaps, leaving only tiny gaps between them. The small triangles that act as false ink traps are a striking detail to aid the complicated legibility. This detail also appears in all characters, such as #?&%, etc.. The diacritics are partially recessed into individual glyphs, yet clear. Donut is a simple uppercase script typeface without unnecessary complexity supplemented with a minimum of OpenType features.
