Kyrios is a curious, slightly psychedelic blackletter family. Though it may seem like a modern idea, it is an interpretation of lettering from a grave monument which was created in the late 1800s for the Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY.
This family is a study in contrasts – not just of form and counterform, but of history and aesthetics. It pairs geometric simplicity with Art Nouveau curves and a blackletter lowercase with a Lombardic uppercase. It includes a rich system of OpenType features to deliver even more range, including alternate blackletter and Roman uppercases. Kyrios comes in a range of optical sizes, from a narrow, striking Display to a surprisingly readable Text with proportions and letterforms that are more familiar to modern readers. Despite these juxtapositions – or because of them – Kyrios delivers a harmonious visual palette and offers far more utility than most display typefaces.

ArrowType is a type foundry and studio practice based in Brooklyn, NY. It specializes in custom type, type design, and font development. ArrowType is the one-person studio of Stephen Nixon, but it occasionally pulls in collaborators to make bigger projects happen.
