About
Description

Each glyph of TA-Hougan is designed within a 10 x 10 grid centered in the EM body whose square is divided into twelve equal sections, like graph paper. Only straight horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines are used. The overall typographic effect is prioritized, though a few glyphs may look unusual. As strokes are aligned on a grid, many strokes share the same positions and angles, and the slopes are well aligned, because the angle is limited to 45-degrees. With only a few characters, you can easily create a logotype effect.
The reason only horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines are used is to not only provide better alignment of strokes but also avoid undesirable darkening at corners where strokes cross each other, especially at sharper angles. By limiting the possible angles at crossings to 45 or 90 degrees, optical illusions are also minimized. Although this approach leads to some extreme glyph shapes, it provides interesting visual effects.
The Hougan family has linear gothic (K) and rounded gothic (M) styles, each of which includes the following four weights 250, 375, 500, 625 (the larger the number the heavier the weight). M500 is one of the rounded style gothic fonts.

This font contains 2,286 characters from the Joyo Kanji List and Jinmei-yo Kanji characters, as well as additional 206 characters including kana characters, punctuation marks and Latin characters, etc.
