Barber typeface is an ode to the glorious art of Vietnamese signpainting. Hand-painted signs, which once dominated urban areas, now remain on storefronts of very few businesses in the Cho Lon area. This typeface was rendered based on one of such remnant—a barbershop’s sign in District 5, Saigon circa mid-1980s. By late 2018, the old barbershop’s sign was no longer visible hidden behind a newer, extended metal one.
The chromatic, all-caps, display typeface consists of 4 font variants. When layered, they create the dimensional typographic effects with lighting and shadows, similar to that of the original hand-painted sign. This style was largely influenced by European lettering in the 19th and 20th century.
Republish is a self-initiated and exploratory project by Behalf Studio. The project seeks to investigate the typographic remnants, hidden in the apertures of urban landscape and archived materials, and revive them into digital typefaces.
The process of creating the digital incarnations often involves both research-driven and speculative design. Starting from the collection and study of vernacular typographic elements, we select the ones that give us ground to experiment with. We will then extrapolate from a few letters to create a completed working typeface, informed by visual research and cultural context.
The output of this project is a curated collection of free and open-source fonts, along with storytelling elements, created by and for Vietnamese people. This is our effort to return the unique but familiar aesthetics of local identity to the community.
